My Story   Leave a comment

I have had various secretarial/PA roles throughout my career but being a Medical Secretary has by far been the most enjoyable.
I started in 1994 at an NHS hospital; previously I worked for a pharmaceutical company for three years but felt it was time to move on. I applied for the role of Medical Secretary although I did not have any experience and only very limited knowledge of medical terminology, but thankfully that was not an issue.
I started in Elderly Medicine and the role of medical secretary was perfect for me. Elderly Medicine is very broad in its speciality as it covers a whole range of illnesses and problems and I learnt the terminology very quickly. I really felt as though I was doing something worthwhile, I felt valued. I was fortunate to have a great job and a fantastic boss.
Unfortunately due to changes in terms and conditions I resigned in 2006 and became an Agency Locum for the next 18 months. During this time I moved around various departments and hospitals learning the new terminology as I went. As I did not want to be temping for the rest of my life and felt that no other permanent position could compensate for the one I had previously; it could never be as good or feel so rewarding. During this time I also had experience of private practice as I covered for several secretaries when they were on leave. I decided to take a leap forward and try and set-up in business as a Medical Secretary/PA and Virtual Assistant by providing permanent and ‘prn’ basis support.
In April 2008 I designed my websites (www.cmoffice.co.uk/cmmedical.co.uk) something which I knew nothing about but learned along the way. To my surprise they were a great success  going by the feedback I received.
I feel I made the right decision as my business is growing year on year, but  less than 4 years ago this was a dream which has now become a reality. I love what I do; the flexibility, variety and freedom it gives me. It just shows no one ever knows what they can achieve until they try.
